Current profile with lips closed

Soooo It was extremely hard for me to put up these photos as I generally HATE my side profile, but I wanted to show you all my current profile so you have a better idea on how an open bite dramatically affects your appearance. My profile is very unflattering, and feels un-natural. If you were to hold up a pencil from my forehead to my chin you would notice how out of proportion my face is. Its extremely convex.

Not only will my Jaw surgery improve my bite function, It will also dramatically alter my profile which I am soooo pleased about :)

I will write another post soon explaining the exact details of how the surgery will put everything into correct alignment. Its truly amazing how it will all come together.. I cant wait!

Because I have to force my lips to close over my open bite,
my cheeks appear big and puffy, almost like a puffer fish. lol
My convex profile make my nose appear larger too :(
look how much my chin recedes!!
When my lips are closed my chin becomes extremely dimpled and strained.
(technical word for this is mentalis strain)
This is my "relaxed face".. I look angry or annoyed, don't I?
Notice the short upper lip and VERY convex profile.

  1. I totally relate to everything you feel about your profile. I've always wondered why my nose appears large from the side when it isn't that big, so I was so happy when I saw that peoples noses look more proportional after having jaw surgery. I have to admit, finding out how much of a difference jaw surgery makes overall really got me over the initial fear. The end results seem so worth it. you must be so excited for your upcoming surgery. :)

  2. Very excited and a bit nervous. Is your profile similar to mine? I guess its very typical of an Open bite. I am particularly concerned about my nose after the surgery. I have been told that the surgery will widen it slightly from a front on viewpoint but I know it will definitely look less prominent which is a big plus!!

  3. Yes I my side profile is similar. I have seen some peoples noses change after the surgery while some stay the same. I know some surgeons I guess sew it into place on the inside so it doesn't move. It is a pain having to substitute a good side profile so possibly having a wider nose but I've only seen a couple people really complain that they noticed a difference. Also I noticed that their noses looked much smaller from the side after the surgery which is such a huge relief! Thats been one of the worst things about my profile, but I guess its a convex thing where the nose just comes out the farthest because of the way the jaw is shaped. the good thing that these surgeons also keep the cosmetic aspect in mind and as a result the overall change always seems to be much more balanced.

This forum has a section with before and after pictures that I found pretty helpful.

  5. Yeah it is definitely made worse by a convex profile but my nose is quite prominent on its own anyway. I have no doubt that the surgery will make it appear more balanced with the rest of my face and even look smaller.. but Im still worried that I will wish my nose looked better.
I have actually come across some really interesting info about patients who have combined rhinoplasty with orthognatic surgery. I am going to have a chat to my surgeon on Tuesday to ask why patients choose to get both.. because apparently there are great advantages for people with our condition. I'm just interested.. not going to rush into anything

Take a look.. The patient in the document has the exact jaw/profile problems as myself. the before and after is amazing!!!

  6. good luck with the surgery, the surgery sounds scary but I think its worth it because the strain of constantly feeling self conscious is a greater stress. I am also in the early stages of getting ready for a jaw surgery, I just want to get it over and done fast

  8. Rhianna, I have the same angry/frustrated look as you when I'm in a "relaxed" position. I cannot wait to get that fixed! I am going to take a profile pic of my self and see if it's convex. My guess is yes because I have a very receded chin and my cheeks look puffy too when I close my mouth. My chin gets the strained, dimpled look also. I try not to take profile pics. I don't think I've worn my hair in a pony tail since I was a kid, except for when I work out.

When is your surgery? Are you having double jaw?
